I’m not sure when I actually purchased this book. I purchased it back when iBooks was my main e-reader source (I now use mainly my Kindle app) and unfortunately, I can’t track my purchase date, either that or I don’t know how. Jamie McGuire has another Maddox brother book coming out soon and I figured I need to start at the beginning, the first Maddox brother, so I have just re-read Beautiful Disaster, probably for the 4th time. There’s not many times where I feel pressure in making sure that I properly express my feelings regarding a book. Usually, the words flow well and I know exactly what it is that I want to say. And I really know what I want to say regarding this book, I just want to say it in a way, that if you haven’t read this book yet, you will be dying to do so by the end of this review. So, I hope that I am able to convey my love for this book/series in a way that makes you desperate. 

This book is going to tell the love story of Abby Abernathy and Travis Maddox and it will be told through Abby’s POV. When I say “love story”, the title of the book really says it all, Beautiful Disaster.

Abby is starting a new life at Eastern University. She was starving for a new life, so her and her BFF, America, made a pact and both are eager to start their freshmen year in a new location. I’m not going to give too much about Abby’s past away, you will need to discover for yourself. Just know that she doesn’t come from stability. She was practically raised in America’s home. They may have made a pact with one another, but America comes from a loving family.

Once at school, America starts dating Shepley almost immediately. Shepley’s cousin, Travis, fights in an underground fighting circle, which is how he “meets” Abby. He actually hits his opponent so hard, that blood splatters on Abby, but those are just details. Travis is immediately taken by her and begins to call her “Pigeon”. Abby is attracted to Travis, but knows he is bad news and in order to live the life that she moved for, must not get involved with him. She also sees that he is really a man-whore and girls are constantly vying for his attention in the hopes of bedding him.

Abby appears to not be affected by the great Travis Maddox and this alone has his interest piqued. After a little back and forth, they both decide that they should be friends. But once the hot water heater is busted at her dorm, Abby and America have to move in with Travis and Shepley until it gets fixed. This will eventually lead to “The Bet” that will lead to Abby living with Travis for a month (she loses the bet).

During the month of cohabitation is where we really see the friendship/relationship between Abby and Travis become deep. As the reader, you do start to try to rewrite in your head and wonder why, especially Abby, is holding out so fiercely, but once you know and understand her past, you understand her just a little more. Not to mention, that this is an 18 going on 19 year old. Her relationship experience is very virginal. Plus, Shepley is not a fan of a Travis and Abby together forever. Shepley is very much in love with America and has lost too many relationships because Travis has went after the friend, so he needs for their relationship to be platonic. This is where you will begin to fall absolutely in love with one Travis Maddox.

This is a book about young love, so except a lot of drama. It gets pretty heavy at times. The story will become pretty tense, almost to where you’re afraid to turn the page. You feel what’s about to happen, while some of it will break your heart a little, other parts will leave you quite angry. But isn’t that what makes a book soooooo good? Yes, yes it is.

This is much more than “just a book”, this is a journey. A journey that as the reader, you’re desperate to forge ahead so you can experience what’s about to happen, but also you’re afraid to turn the page, because of what you think is about to happen. For me, that’s a true book. Where you can get angry, then laugh. Cry, then love. All within a span of chapters. I don’t want to give a lot away with this book, because it is too important for you to turn the page and take the journey yourself. This book is more than ideas of self discoveries and first loves. Jamie McGuire has really written a book that has a rainbow of emotions. The main color of that rainbow being LOVE. This book can be read and enjoyed by a range of ages, I’m in my thirties with 3 kids and this book gets me every time. I re-read a lot of books and sometimes after re-reading, I don’t feel the same joy as I did the first time that I read it. Well, this is my 4th time to read this story and each time I feel like I get something different from it.

I know with most of my reviews I pay a little time to the sex in books. I won’t do that here, because that is not what this book is about. Does it have sex? Yes, but I feel that in this book it was the “next logical step” when dealing with Abby and Travis’ relationship and not really written to set your sheets on fire or melt the panties right off of your body.

I may read a lot of books by a lot of different authors, but there are only a handful of authors that for me, really know how to give a book a connection to the reader and Jamie McGuire is one of those authors. Maybe more than any other because I’ve only read this particular series of hers (Beautiful Disaster/Maddox Brothers Series). I may say it a lot, but this is one of those books that NEED to be made into a movie. This is such a wonderful book, I know that I didn’t give it half of the rave that it deserves through this review, but take my word for it, READ THIS!

Cook Time: 1 hour
Total Time: 1 hour 15 minutes

Ingredients

  • 2 large OR 3 medium ripe bananas (mashed)
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • OPTIONAL:
  • 3/4 cup chocolate chips
  • OR
  • 3/4 cup chopped walnuts

Instructions

PREHEAT OVEN TO 350° F. GREASE A 9X5 INCH LOAF PAN.

IN A LARGE BOWL, WHISK TOGETHER:

  1. Bananas
  2. Sugar
  3. Oil
  4. Eggs
  5. Vanilla

IN A SEPARATE BOWL, SIFT TOGETHER:

  1. Flour
  2. Baking Powder
  3. Salt
  4. Baking Soda

Using a rubber spatula, FOLD the flour mixture into the wet mixture. Mix until just combined. **If you are using walnuts or chocolate chips, fold in now**

Pour the batter into the prepared pan and smooth out top. TIP: Bang pan on countertop to level out top and get rid of air bubbles.

Bake until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out with moist crumbs and the top is golden brown. Bake time should be about 1 hour to 1 hour and 10 minutes.

Let cool in the loaf pan on a wire rack for 10 minutes. Remove from pan and let cool completely on a wire rack.

Notes

Freezes well. You can either freeze by the loaf, just wrap well with plastic wrap and place in freezer bag. OR you can slice up your loaf and wrap each slice well with plastic wrap, place in freezer bag, then pull out as needed.

Great for snacks. Packs well in the lunchbox. Use for french toast. Cube and toast for croutons.

I am not a really big fan of Spaghetti Warehouse. But, when we decide to dine out there, I always get Manicotti. This is one of the dishes that I’ve never really thought about making at home, but I came across a recipe and thought “why not?”

My son is the picky eater in the house (along with the hubby), but the daughters ate this up. They loved it. We chose to make 2 different pans, using only one box of pasta, but one pan was with our Crock Pot Marinara Sauce and the other was with our Alfredo Sauce. Both turned out so much better than what I get at Spaghetti Warehouse. The only thing missing was their delicious bread.

This is pretty easy to put together, just make sure to read the notes before preparing.

I KNOW THAT THERE IS NOT ONE THING ABOUT THESE DISHES THAT SCREAM “HEALTH FOOD”, MODERATION FOLKS, MODERATION!

Four Cheese Manicotti

  • 1 box (12 to 14 shells manicotti noodles)
  • 15 ounces ricotta cheese
  • 4 ounces cream cheese
  • 1/2 shredded Parmesan cheese
  • 8 ounces of Mozzarella (this will go into your filling)
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 to 2 cups of shredded Mozzarella (this is going to top your dish)
  • salt and pepper
  • 3 to 4 cups of Crock Pot Marinara or jar sauce of your choosing.
  • 3 to 4 cups of Alfredo Sauce

  10. Once all shells are placed in pan, cover with the remaining sauce, then top with Mozzarella cheese.
  11. Bake in 350 degree oven, uncovered for 30 minutes.
  • When I prepare this dish, I use half the shells for Marinara Sauce and half for Alfredo Sauce. I’m only using 1 box of pasta. They will each use a 9×13 pan. If you choose to only use one sauce, you will probably still need a second pan.The filling should be enough for (1) box of shells.
  • For the sauce amounts, if you are making both types of Manicotti and are going to use a jar sauce, 1 jar of each should be enough (depending on how saucy you like it). I used my recipes for Crock Pot Marinara and Alfredo Sauce for this recipe, so honestly, I just ladled sauce onto the bottom of the pans, and then topped with sauce until I was satisfied.
  • When it says to use 2 cups shredded Mozzarella for the toppings, that is 1 cup for each pan. This is your dish, use more, use less, totally up to you. Hell, you don’t even have to use Mozzarella if you don’t like it, but are there really people who don’t like Mozzarella? Hmmm, crazy.
  • You don’t really have to cook your shells, I do because I prefer it that way. If you choose to not cook your shells before baking, you will need to bake for about 60 minutes.
  • I choose to bake my dish uncovered because I only bake mine for 30 minutes. However, if you are going in with uncooked noodles, then you probably should cover your dish(es) with foil for the first 45-50 minutes of baking, then uncover for the remaining 10-15 minutes.
  • On a very unhealthy note, make sure you serve with some good, crusty bread to sop up all of your sauce, but throw in a side salad to balance it all out.

    Let me lay one of my many personal opinions on you, here goes, if people, even those who claim to be horrible cooks, knew how easy it was to make things from scratch, they would be shocked. I’m not that mom who reads every label (I need to be, I know), but I am the mom that believes if you have the opportunity to control the quality of ingredients that you and your family are going to consume AND it still tastes F*CKING AMAZING, then why the hell not. 

    I enjoy jarred salsa. Pace Picante or even Tostitos brand does great in a pinch, but for me (and my tribe) nothing is as good as salsa made fresh at home.

    Let’s not get crazy, I don’t cook my own tomatoes, so I do use those out of a can, but everything else is fresh.

    Prep Time: 5 minutes

    Ingredients

    • (1) 28 ounce can of whole, peeled tomatoes (SAVE THE JUICE-see notes)
    • 1 small red onion OR 1/2 of a large onion, rough chopped
    • 1 whole lime, juiced
    • 3 cloves garlic OR 2 tablespoons minced garlic
    • 1 whole jalapeño (see notes)
    • 1 bunch of cilantro
    • Salt to taste

    Instructions

    1. In a blender or food processor add all ingredients and blend until it reaches the consistency YOU prefer.
    2. Taste and adjust seasonings if necessary.

    Notes

    When adding the tomatoes, you don't have to use the juice if you don't want to. The pictures that you see, are with the juice. If you choose not to use the juice, save it. That way just in case there is not enough liquid in your salsa after you have blended the ingredients, you can add some of the juice.

    I know that cilantro is a "love 'em or hate 'em" ingredient. I personally think that salsa is not complete without cilantro. But I don't measure it, I literally just pull off a handful from the bunch, rough chop it, and toss it in. If you are not too sure, start small then add more if needed.

    Precision chopping is not necessary. Rough chop and throw in to be blended.

    Throw in an ice pack and this packs well in a lunchbox.

    The nutrition label listed should only be used as a guide.

    You control the heat here. If you like your salsa a little tame, then make sure to remove the pith and seeds from the jalapeno (a spoon is perfect for this chore). If you like it spicy, just rough chop the pepper and throw it in.

    Think that salsa is only for tortilla chips? Think again my BXTCHES, use this for:
    Add to some sour cream for sour cream salsa. Use it for a dip or anything that you add sour cream to (i.e. baked potato, tacos, nachos, frito pie).

    Use it alone on a salad or add it to your ranch for a spicy kick.

    This works well in a Mexican style layered dip.

    Use for any style tacos. Regular or breakfast.

    Add to your scrambled eggs for some extra heat in the morning.

    Making a Mexican Pizza? Top it off with some salsa.

    This is really a great party food. While I do think that the Crock Pot is becoming more of a “What can I throw in and forget about it”, this is a recipe that spotlights that idea. Which, when you’re trying to get things ready for a party, is the type of food you’re going for. As much as I would like to prepare what I can the day before, I’m really not that organized. So if a recipe presents itself to be easily thrown together and I feel is going to be a hit, then I’m going for it.

    With a lot of recipes, they are inspired from one site that was inspired from another. I’m just going to link you to where I got this recipe from and let you track it backwards if you please.

    Crockpot Spinach & Artichoke Dip

    Ingredients

    • (2) 14 ounce can artichoke hearts, drained and chopped
    • (1) 10 ounce package frozen spinach, thawed and squeezed dry
    • 1 cup sour cream
    • 1 small onion, diced
    • 2 cloves garlic (crushed) OR 1/2 tablespoon minced garlic
    • 3/4 cup shredded parmesan cheese
    • 3/4 cup milk
    • 1/4 cup crumbled feta cheese
    • 1/3 cup mayonnaise
    • 1 tablespoon red wine vinegar
    • 8 ounces cream cheese (cubed)
    • pepper to taste

    Instructions

    1. In the crockpot combine: artichokes, spinach, sour cream, onion, garlic, parmesan, milk, feta, mayonnaise, vinegar.
    2. Add pepper (to taste) and stir until well combined.
    3. Top with cubed cream cheese.
    4. Cover and cook on low for approx. 2 hours.

    Notes

    Wait to add any necessary salt until you're able to taste final dish. The ingredients add some salt and you don't want to overdue it.

    Just a tip: Check your local warehouse stores (Costco/Sam's), you may be able to find the artichokes much cheaper.

    Serve with sliced french bread, crackers, tortilla chips, or if you're really have no self-control, eat it by itself.

    This held up really well for us. But if you're party is going to go on for hours, you may want to up the milk a bit, especially if you are serving it straight from the Crock Pot.

    I’m not really sure how I came across this book, but I will say that I am certainly glad I did. Now, There are several other titles from Ms. Heller, including a soon to be follow up to this book, that I cannot wait to read. I just hope that she adds much more to her resumè, because this book is brilliant.

    This book is exactly what the title says: The Chronicles of Moxie and is told through the POV of Moxie Summers. Moxie is a kindergarten teacher in the city of Chicago and has no filter when it comes to speaking her mind. I’m going to be honest and tell you that what I love about this book is that our heroine Moxie, is a curvaceous size 16 and has caught the eye of Mr. Hotness. Now, I’m sure that there are some individuals who would believe that this set-up is unrealistic. Well to those individuals, I say “F” you.

    Here is the situation. Moxie is the step-daughter to Martha (who really thinks that she is Moxie’s mother) and Martha is consistently setting Moxie up on dates so she can find “the one”. After another disaster, Moxie and her BFF Renee decide to hit the bar. Once Moxie is is good and wasted, she decides the topic she would like to discuss the most is hairy balls vs. non-hairy balls. And with this discussion comes an impromptu bar survey and while conducting this survey with a super hot guy she proceeds to vomit all over his shoes. Not a problem right? It is a complete stranger after all. But this complete stranger happens to be the father to Dillon, the new student in Moxie’s class.

    Dillon, who is so adorable and super smart to boot, and his dad, Miles are new to the Chicago area. Tragedy hit their family hard and they are making a change for the better. From the very beginning you know that Miles is attracted to Moxie, not just the curves but the whole package. While Moxie can read the innuendos that he is sending out, she’s not too sure on how to take them. He is the father of a student and her fellow teacher/sworn enemy, Amber continues to insinuate that her and Miles have something going on and once you put some self-doubt into the head of a women, insecure thoughts will not slow down.

There’s Amber (her adult nemesis), a sex toy party and even more vomiting. It is really funny and told so fantastically. The supporting characters are very well written and developed. Here’s really the love behind this book. I think that when you can take a character like Moxie and develop her against everything that society says a leading woman should be and do it exceptionally well, you are truly gifted. I also think that it can’t be an easy decision to make your leading lady someone like Moxie. And to also develop her where she is so free-spirited and so sure in who she is for the most part. That really does a positive number on a readers self-esteem. So, applause to you Ms. Heller.

    When I read a book, I always try to imagine the book being “live” whether on T.V. or a movie version. This is one of those books that I can certainly see come to life in a T.V. series (cable, of course). This is definitely worth the read and even a re-read. I don’t think you will be disappointed.

    If you have been under the assumption that a homemade Alfredo Sauce is a no go because it’s just too difficult, well, I’m here to put your mind at ease.

    This is the recipe that we use whenever we make a recipe that requires Alfredo Sauce. I can’t even tell you how many years we’ve been using this, but I can say that we NEVER buy Alfredo Sauce in a jar. 

    Here’s the thing, there is NOTHING healthy about this recipe, except maybe it’s low carb, but really? There is a ton of fat and calories in this recipe, but it’s nice to indulge every once and a while.

    PLEASE read through the entire recipe before beginning. I have listed the steps in the recipe as well as pictures. This is not a complicated recipe, but once you get past step 1, it will move quickly.

    Alfredo Sauce

    • 1 1/2 quarts of heavy whipping cream (I know the picture shows one quart, but we used 1 1/2)
    • 1 canister (7 ounce of Kraft Shredded Parmesan, Romano, and Asiago Cheese Blend (see pic))
    • 2 large egg yolks
    • 1/2 tsp salt
    • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
    • 1 tsp black pepper

    Listed in steps, please refer to the pictures listed as well

    1. STEP 1: Pour entire quart of heavy cream in a saucepan over high heat (actually one notch below high) and allow to boil
    2. STEP 2: Once cream begins to boil (stir to avoid overflow) reduce heat to medium and allow to reduce and thicken-this should take about 20 minutes. Be sure to stir occasionally.
    3. STEP 3: Look at the picture, this is after 20 minutes.
    4. STEP 4: Add the entire canister of the cheese blend. Be sure to whisk the entire time to incorporate the cheese throughout the cream and to allow cheese to melt.
    5. STEP 5: Whisk, Whisk,Whisk then remove from heat. Add salt/pepper/garlic powder. Mix well.
    6. STEP 6: In a separate bowl, whisk the egg yolk.
    7. STEP 7: Add a small amount of the cream mixture to the egg yolk (only about 1 or 2 ladles). Mix well.
    8. STEP 8: Add the remaining cream mixture to the egg yolk mixture (step 7) and stir thoroughly.
  • It will take a while for the cream to start boiling and for it to thicken and reduce. But once this happens, the steps will speed by, so be ready.
  • Once the cream starts to boil, begin to whisk, vigorously. It will overflow if you don’t continue to whisk.
  • This will yield you about 1 1/2 quarts of sauce. You can easily double this if needed.
  • The seasoning amounts listed are what we use, feel free to increase or decrease to your liking.
  • This is good the next day and maybe the day after. Once you hit day 4, it is not going to hold itself together well. To reheat use microwave or stove.
  • This is a very versatile recipe. Use it for:
    • Fettuccine Alfredo. Add chicken and make a delicious Chicken Alfredo or my favorite way to eat Fettuccine Alfredo is to mix some Basil Pesto into the Alfredo sauce and top with chicken, sliced mushrooms, and red bell pepper.

    I admit, I do love Paula Deen. And most of her recipes that I have tried, have worked out fantastically. This one is not different.

    This is such a great potluck dessert and is SOOOOO simple.

    Lemon Blossoms

    FOR THE BLOSSOMS

    • 18.5 ounce box yellow cake mix
    • 3.5 instant lemon pudding mix (not prepared)
    • 4 large eggs
    • 3/4 cup vegetable oil

    FOR THE ICING

    • 4 cups confectioners’ sugar
    • 1/3 cup fresh lemon juice
    • zest of 1 lemon
    • 3 tbsp. vegetable oil
    • 3 tbsp. water

    1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
    2. Spray miniature muffin pan with cooking spray.

    Combine

    1. Cake Mix
    2. Pudding Mix
    3. Eggs
    4. Oil
    5. Blend well with an electric mixer for about 2 minutes.
    6. Pour a small amount of batter into each muffin tin (filling about halfway).
    7. Bake for approx.12 minutes
    8. Turn out onto tea towel or cooling rack.

    FOR ICING

    1. Sift the confectioners’ sugar into a large mixing bowl
    2. Add the lemon juice, zest, oil, and water.
    3. Mix with spoon or wire whisk until smooth.

    **To ice the blossoms

    1. Make sure they are cool.
    2. Dip top into icing, pull out and using a angled spatula or butter knife, scrape the excess and place blossom onto a rack (put foil or pan underneath to catch the excess icing).
  • I’m all for using a store brand on a product where there is no difference in taste. I have tried the store brand pudding here and I did not like the taste. I tasted very powdery. So, I really recommend Jell-O brand.
  • This is very lemony. With the pudding in the cake and the zest and juice in the icing, the lemon comes powering through. Cut on either the zest or juice if you need to.
  • I use about 1/2 – 3/4 tbsp of batter in the muffin tin. I have actually used more, but as it cooks it will spill over and then it starts to connect with the other blossoms and isn’t very pretty.
  • Makes great snacks for the lunchbox.
